Set in the autumn of 1954 in Hoffnung Township, Holmes County, Ohio, Shine on Harvest Moon is narrated by local large-animal veterinarian Wendell B. Trout. When a metropolitan magazine photographer named Rudolph Pomerantz falls to his death inside a newly raised Amish bank barn, the county prosecutor and sensationalist media immediately cry "hex murder". However, with the reluctant assistance of an observant local harness-maker named Amos Yoder, Trout uncovers the astonishing reality: Pomerantz wasn't murdered at all, but was instead the victim of a cascading chain of nine completely independent, well-intentioned, midnight acts of neighborly kindness.
