From medically assisted procreation to euthanasia, not to mention genetic therapy, cloning and GMOs, scientific and medical progress is more than ever under question. The media regularly publicizes stories, both touching and frightening, of the result or possible consequences of some medical procedure or another. Ethical committees make their statements, politicians attempt to clarify the debate, courts try to enforce existing laws and all kinds of associations voice their often discordant opinions. Two eminent researchers have joined their talent, science and culture to help clear away the confusion surrounding these issues. One, a famous hematologist, has lived through half a century of stupefying medical advances. The other, a genetic biologist, has a reputation of directness and a biting sense of humor. Two unique viewpoints that more often than not find themselves on opposing sides but who agree on one point: the absurdity of attempting to make bioethical laws.
