Silane springs

PRIMAVERE SILANE tells the stories of men and women from southern Italy against the backdrop of a country in transition, from the post-war countryside to the social struggles of the 1960s and 1970s. Cettina - the protagonist - scarred by violence she suffered as a child and having grown up amidst poverty, political corruption and organised crime, embodies the struggle and courage of a South that refuses to give in. Her personal story is interwoven with the collective history: the peasants' struggles to claim land, emigration overseas to Northern Italy and neighbouring countries, social demands, and youth uprisings. Against this backdrop, her studies and her work as a teacher become tools of emancipation for her, leading to the full realisation of her self-worth and autonomy. The novel gives a voice to characters who share the same stubborn desire for redemption: women trying to free themselves from imposed roles and unspoken violence, men torn between loyalty to an ancient order and a desire for change. The whole story is told in clear, controlled prose, underpinned by an emotional tension that grips the reader from the first page to the last.
