Bol Snails of the Apocalypse, the fifth book from Whiting Award winner Martha Zweig, takes on life's most persistent questions and refuses to settle for familiar answers. The poems revel in the idiosyncratic diction and syntax of daily life; they resist tidiness. From childhood to motherhood to grandmotherhood, from sea to garden to kitchen stove, from goat to frog, from dog to the titular snails, Zweig finds the strangeness and beauty and humor in all of it--and the inescapable muse of language: "The frog in the throat is language. The prince / chokes up. Love always / wants to croon, grunts the frog." Snails of the Apocalypse invites us to return to the imaginary gardens of poetry, filled with real toads.
