I want to talk to you like you are sitting across from me in my office in Lakeland, Florida, because that is exactly how this book was written. Not from a tower of academic distance. Not from the comfortable remove of a theorist who has read extensively about trauma but has never been in the middle of it at two in the morning, wondering if the child in the next room is going to burn the house down - metaphorically or otherwise. I have been in that middle. I live in that middle. And I wrote this book from that middle, because that is where you are, and that is where the truth lives. Let me tell you what this book is not. It is not a book that tells you to just love them more, or that patience is the answer, or that if you simply try this one technique everything will change by Tuesday. Those books already exist.
