This thesis examines the recent history of Turkey, focusing in particular on the military coup of 1980, which had two significant consequences. Firstly, it was followed by a severe wave of repression against the left; and secondly, the country adopted the economic deregulation and liberalisation policies prescribed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in the wake of neoliberalism. The central question of this thesis is to what extent these two developments paved the way for Islamisation in Turkey during the 1980s and 1990s, a process that came to fruition with the electoral victory of the AKP (Justice and Development Party) in 2002.
