SOLUTE CARRIER PROTEIN FAMILY

Selective transport mechanisms across the cell membrane are essential for maintaining cellular integrity and physiological balance. Drug transport proteins (DCPs) mediate the movement of endogenous molecules and therapeutic agents into and out of cells. These proteins are highly expressed in the liver, kidneys, brain, and intestines, where they regulate key cellular functions. Substances such as sugars, amino acids, vitamins, neurotransmitters, and xenobiotics are transported through these mechanisms, preserving physiological balance and protecting cells from harmful compounds. The solute carrier (SLC) protein family directly influences drug absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, thereby affecting therapeutic efficacy, toxicity, and drug-drug interactions.
