It provides a brief insight into how the clinical picture of spinal cord injury is defined. It also addresses the special nursing care requirements in relation to spinal shock, autonomic dysreflexia, the respiratory situation, problems with the bladder and gastrointestinal tract, positioning, mobilisation and pressure ulcer prevention. The exceptional psychological situation in which the acutely paraplegic patient finds themselves is also discussed.
