Joe and Max is a 2002 American German television film that dramatizes the real life boxing rivalry and lifelong friendship between American heavyweight champion Joe Louis and German boxer Max Schmeling. Set against the rise of Nazi Germany and the approach of World War II, the film follows their historic title fights in 1936 and 1938, showing how propaganda turns their bouts into symbols of racial and political conflict. Away from the ring, it portrays Schmeling’s uneasy relationship with the Nazi regime and Louis’s struggles with racism and, later, financial hardship. Despite public portrayal as enemies, the men develop a deep mutual respect that becomes a lasting friendship, continuing long after their careers end. The film stars Leonard Roberts as Joe Louis, Til Schweiger as Max Schmeling, and Peta Wilson in a key supporting role, and is directed by Steve James.
