Spoon River Anthology

Spoon River Anthology by Edgar Lee Masters is a groundbreaking collection of free-verse poems published in 1915 that presents the epitaphs of deceased residents of the fictional town of Spoon River. Through these candid monologues spoken from beyond the grave, the book exposes the hidden lives, secrets, failures, and desires of ordinary people, revealing the contrast between public reputations and private truths. Darkly ironic, emotionally direct, and often unsettling, the anthology critiques social hypocrisy, moral judgment, and small-town American life in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Widely regarded as a classic of modern American poetry, Spoon River Anthology is praised for its psychological depth, innovative structure, and unflinching honesty.
