With a three-year prison sentence, Jack had begun his final slide downward. Had he learned anything? Jack fell out of the world for years, off the map, unseen by everybody. He never knew if he was going to wake up in a cozy refrigerator box in a downtown alley or a chilly steel bunk at the county lockup. He'd become a junkie and hardened chronic criminal.
