Between 1897 and 1903 James Reuel Smith rode around Manhattan and the Bronx on his bicycle with a camera and a tripod and documented the springs and wells that were disappearing as the city grew and as Croton water reached more residents. He left money in his will for the New-York Historical Society to publish a book of the work which they did in 1938.
