Birds exhibit a wide range of beautiful feather colors that serve vital roles beyond aesthetics, includingcommunication, mate attraction, and camouflage. The Indian Crow (Corvus splendens), Greater Coucal(Centropus sinensis), and Black Drongo (Dicrurus macrocercus) are common Indian birds that appear dark orblack but display iridescent shine under light due to specialized feather structures. When light strikes from different angles, these feather structures reflectvarying hues and intensities. This study reveals that feather coloration in these species arises from both pigmentsand nanostructural mechanisms that manipulate light like natural prisms or mirrors, creating glossy andiridescent effects. Understanding these natural photonic structures provides insights into avian evolution andthe physics of color proproduction without dyes. Such mechanisms inspire innovations in material science, including the design of eco-friendly, color-changing surfaces and optical coatings.
