Agricultural subsidies have been granted for many years, both under the common European agricultural policy and in the form of export refunds, and have had a distorting and, in some cases, destructive effect on competition. This paper attempts to take a closer look at the world of subsidies and compensation payments in European agriculture and to discuss whether these support payments can be a future-proof instrument for European agriculture or whether they will lead to a dead end in the long term. The effects of agricultural subsidies on developing countries will also be examined in more detail.
