Intervention research and supervision support individuals and social systems facing difficulties or undergoing processes of change. This paper examines the extent to which supervision and intervention research differ from one another, and to what extent they involve similar topics and forms of counselling. In addressing this question, theoretical approaches are presented; supervision and intervention research are described in terms of their methods, processes and characteristics; and their similarities and differences are outlined. The theory is reinforced by examples and excerpts from actual research and supervision processes drawn from practice.
