One of the poorest countries in the world, Chad is an agro-pastoral nation with the greatest agricultural potential in the Sahel region. Despite this potential, the country faces recurring food crises. To increase and diversify rural production, the Chadian government has established rural development agencies, programs, and projects in collaboration with its development partners, with the goal of achieving sustainable growth in agricultural production while preserving the environment. Thus, the grain shortages Chad faces have highlighted the need to implement sustainable agriculture. However, such a change cannot be achieved solely through increased production, because the existing dynamics surrounding agriculture show that it does not depend solely on farmers, or on the government's will, much less on mere technical innovations in farming practices. Transitioning from traditional, so-called shifting cultivation to sustainable agriculture requires a change in the production system-one that cannot happen overnight.
