Sustainable agriculture in Côte d'Ivoire: Cocoa Sustainability Initiative

If nothing is done for future generations, chocolate made from 'brown gold' will become a luxury item. The main threat to the cocoa economy is the ageing of the plantations. Added to this is the ageing of the farmers, and the lack of a sustainable policy for marketing and mechanising cocoa production. Climate change is a factor in Côte d'Ivoire (the world's leading cocoa producer), where a lack of abundant rainfall has led to a decline in production. Sustainable cocoa production addresses the need for participation, democracy, integration, transparency, environmental quality and the long-term viability of resources; it ensures a fair economic exchange between producers and consumers; and it meets the needs for equity, justice, solidarity and cohesion amongst all stakeholders in the cocoa sector. This book is aimed at researchers, producers, manufacturers and consumers of cocoa.
