Early July of 1863 the United States experienced the largest battle of the Civil War in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Only days later, Confederate General John Hunt Morgan, with 2400 cavalry, boldly conducted a raid into southern Indiana. After five days of uncontested havoc, fear, theft and destruction was left in their wake. The small community of Vernon, Indiana was in their path. What took place there, only sealed the determination of the young Titus Buchanan, eager to participate before it was too late. Leaving the comforts of his home and loving family to volunteer, he traded it all for adventure and the chance to prove his patriotism. Armed with physique and self-confidence, he feels ready to take on the enemy. He soon discovers the enemy is not confined to the battlefield, but much closer than he expects. Conflicts and confusion test his honor and Christian faith, which is left wanting. The 11th Indiana Cavalry, with which Ty serves, is ultimately sent to Nashville Tennessee, to protect the major railway all the way to northern Alabama. As a member of a detachment for special assignments, he experiences many events of which one includes an unexpected, brief encounter that melts his heart. This promising romance suddenly evaporates, with little hope, only to worsen as time goes forward.Meanwhile, the Army of the Confederacy is advancing northwest to Nashville, Tennessee, to challenge the last Union bastion of defense in the western theatre. In all, this is a journey on horseback, of roads, crossings, and bridges which requires decisions that profoundly changes his life.
