Tahafut al Falasifa: La refutación de los filosofos

Following the publication of Averroes' response in his Tahâfut al-Tahâfut (The Refutation of the Refutation), this edition presents the work that gave rise to that famous debate: the Tahâfut al-Falâsifa (The Refutation of the Philosophers), composed by Abû Hâmid al-Ghazâlî, known as Algacel. This is the first time that a complete and annotated translation of this text, which is crucial to understanding medieval Islamic thought and the intellectual background of Averroes's response, has been made available in Spanish. Written at the end of the 11th century, the Tahâfut al-Falâsifa is a critical examination of the metaphysical doctrines defended by philosophers of Greek heritage, especially Avicenna and al-Fârâbî. Algacel analyzes central issues such as the creation or eternity of the world, divine attributes, knowledge of God, causality, the nature of the soul, and the resurrection of bodies. His aim is to show that philosophical speculation, when it exceeds certain limits and attempts to resolve the ultimate problems of faith on its own, incurs contradictions that affect the foundations of revealed religion. The text also serves as a warning against those who, dazzled by the logic and prestige of the ancient sages, adopt without critical examination doctrines that are foreign to the theological framework of Islam. This edition includes philological and explanatory notes that allow the reader to clearly follow this complex and methodologically rigorous treatise. The Refutation of the Philosophers is not only an essential piece of the intellectual history of Islam, but also an indispensable starting point for understanding Averroes' response. Therefore, after having already presented Averroes' reply, the reader is now offered the original work that provoked it, thus completing the great philosophical debate between the Islamic East and al-Andalus.
