Taking of the Land: Roads, War, Law, and Making Alabama

The land had always been home. Then others began deciding who had the right to keep it.Taking of the Land continues The Alabama Frontier Series into an era when trade, settlement, treaties, war, and expanding government power began transforming the Southeast. As European and American settlement increased, the Cherokee and Muscogee faced growing pressure on their homelands. Boundaries shifted. Alliances changed. Treaties promised peace while opening the door to further loss. Settlers, speculators, military leaders, and government officials all played a role in reshaping the land that would become Alabama. This volume examines the conflicts, decisions, promises, and betrayals that pushed the region toward statehood while changing the lives of the people who had called it home for generations. This is more than the story of territory changing hands. It is the story of what happened when one people's homeland became another people's frontier.
