Tales of India's Eco Heroes: Unsung, Unwept and Unhonoured

Many of the people that this narrative features are people larger than life, audacious in their approach and their desire to bring change, crippled by limitations of resources, with king-sized egos that kept their energy fueled. From Khonoma to the south of Kohima, to Hoshangabad to the east of Bhopal, or Kasargod to the south of Mangalore, they are people who have inspired isolated models that the country and other communities and people can easily take to elsewhere.The stories may be specific to one person's or a community's challenge, yet the issues are national. Most sections bring that connect with the national overview, but if as a reader you feel you need the context for a certain section, you can look at the essay that comes before or succeeds. If there is a limitation, it is that the narrative juxtaposes many contexts with numbers, for the writer has for long been used to seeing the size and dimension of a challenge in comparison to something else that is large or small. Then there are chapters that are not about any single person but the bigger challenge that confronts us in cities and the countryside on the dwindling resource pools of water and energy.The people who feature in this book represent a very large section of India's diverse social fabric. One that is much larger than the 10 per cent of the population who manage their lives. Sadly, this is a section that is beyond the visual spectrum of the elite. And of course beyond the sight of the regular media that rarely, if ever, connects with these people or the concerns that speak of the India that can be.
