In een onbekende tijd combineren robots met bewustzijn in de wereld naast de mensen. Tussen angst en interdependentie is de relatie tussen de twee rassen gedoemd om eeuwig in de weg te blijven. De hoofdfiguur is een voormalige politieagent die zijn carrière heeft opgegeven, teleurgesteld door de politie en nu als privédetective zijn levensonderhoud verdient, van de ene aap naar de andere, van de ene fles naar de andere als in een mist. Om hem heen wordt de stad 's nachts en dag verlicht, bedekt door de enorme hemelse stad die het zonlicht verbergt. In deze schaduw worden alle verboden wensen tot leven gebracht.
