teaching jazz: Lennie Tristano's methods

Lennie Tristano is one of the most outstanding and original pianists in jazz history. With his extremely distinctive and virtuoso playing style, his rhythmic and harmonic explorations, and his anticipation of classic free jazz, he influenced the evolution of jazz as an American art form. In addition to his artistic career, he shaped the development of jazz education like no other. Lennie Tristano was one of the first to develop a structured system for learning the skills needed to express oneself creatively and individually in the language of jazz. Over a period of more than thirty years, he taught several hundred students and produced an extraordinarily high rate of successful jazz musicians. His teaching methods are not only historically interesting, but are still highly relevant today and valuable to anyone seeking an answer to the question of how jazz can be successfully learned and taught.
