The 1940s went down in history and in the collective imagination as Hollywood's golden age, before the collapse of the major studios and the arrival of television. If 1939 was the mythical year - the year of Gone with the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, among others - what followed was an equally mythical period. In Anos 40: Hollywood do idealismo à desilusão (The 1940s: Hollywood from idealism to disillusionment), Ricardo Luiz de Souza examines several dozen productions made in Hollywood throughout the 1940s. The author does not limit himself to the classics and leaves out some of the best-known films. On the other hand, he works with films that are almost unknown, but which represent well the period in which they were made and deserve to be rescued because they are good, sometimes excellent films. The approach also covers filmmakers who are little valued today, who cannot be placed alongside the great masters, such as John Ford or Howard Hawks. However, sometimes, amid a body of work that is usually of little relevance, they created films that are worth remembering. Some of these films are analysed by the author.
