Based on the baroque mandolin, the Neapolitan mandolin appeared mid-18th century. A key player in its development ¿ motivated by the search for an instrument with greater volume of sound and a more assertive treble ¿ was the Vinaccia family. Among their notable innovations was that the four double strings were now tuned in fifths, like those of a violin, with a scale length of about 33 cm. The instrument was also redesigned and took on a new shape. This is how the story of the modern mandolin begins, as recounted by luthier Alfred Woll. As well as its development in its native Italy, the author details its proliferation in Germany and the conception of a new type of mandolin at the hands of Reinhold Seiffert. Following his historical excursions, Alfred Woll lets us look over his shoulder in his workshop, providing an insight into how his mandolins are made, supported by many detailed photos and construction drawings.
