Press freedom in Côte d'Ivoire, although having experienced notable progress with the decriminalization of press offenses, has gone through and is going through phases of uncertainty marked by political pressure, financial sanctions and intimidation of various kinds. From the first colonial organs through a controlled post-independence press and the "press spring" of 1990, the media landscape has become pluralistic over time, but often polarized, limiting its independence. Today, in 2026, press freedom in Côte d'Ivoire remains marked by a contrast between historic legislative advances and new structural as well as political challenges.
