This book, the product of academic research, is the result of travels through Africa, where places of memory and testimonies of the past still revealed traces of the French colonial presence. In Cameroon, following a career as a coffee buyer, chance encounters and a series of coincidences during long trips through the bush revealed to the author a past that was both near and far. The painful history of independence in 1960 in the Bamileke region remained obscured and then forgotten, even as France congratulated itself on the success of its decolonization policy. France's last colonial war-for it was indeed a war-achieved its objectives amid general indifference. Generations come and go. Do the Bamilékés remember what now belongs to history? This book hopes to provide an answer to that question.
