the Behaviourally Armed Leader: Ancient wisdom, behavioural science, and art of leading people who don't run on logic

"As one would expect from a master storyteller, a crackingly good read." Rory Sutherland, Vice Chairman, OgilvyThe meeting went well.Better than well, actually. The strategy was clear, the logic was airtight, and you'd spent weeks getting the numbers right. That was three months ago. And somehow, almost nothing has changed. If that story is familiar, this book is for you. Most leaders are intelligent, well-intentioned, and working from the wrong model of the human beings they are trying to lead. They treat people as rational actors who respond to good arguments. The behavioural sciences have spent seventy years proving, with considerable precision, that they are not. People run on logic in the same way that a horse runs on petrol. The Behaviourally Armed Leader draws on behavioural science, ancient philosophy, and two decades of working with leaders across financial services, government, technology, and professional services to give you something most leadership books quietly avoid: a working understanding of how people actually work. You will learn why the standard change management playbook fails almost every time. You will understand the neurological reasons why feedback conversations go wrong, why trust is built and destroyed in small moments rather than grand gestures, and why your best-intentioned leadership behaviours may be producing the opposite of what you intend. You will find out what Aristotle, Kahneman, Rory Sutherland, and Amy Edmondson all agree on, and why that agreement matters more than any strategy framework currently on your desk.Across ten chapters, this book covers the science of motivation, influence, vision, trust, psychological safety, and difficult conversations, grounded in decades of peer-reviewed research and translated into the practical language of everyday leadership. This is not a book about becoming a better manager. It is a book about leading human beings as they actually are, rather than as a logical model of them would conveniently behave.Go armed.
