Shortly before WWII, Yas Matsumoto commits his troublesome younger brother, Stum, to an asylum — unknowingly sparing Stum from the cruelty of the Japanese Canadian internment camps. Decades later, the two brothers reunite near the end of their lives, peeling back layers of memories to revisit a long-buried, unspeakable family secret. One morning in Toronto, Cathy Matsumoto’s father, Yasuo, calls to announce he intends to visit a dying cousin in Victoria. Cathy’s never heard of this mysterious relative before, but she begrudgingly agrees to plan a cross-country family trip.
