the Brooklyn Underworld Prince: Joe Masseria and Violent Road to Mafia Power

For nearly a decade, Giuseppe "Joe the Boss" Masseria stood at the summit of New York's Italian-American underworld.Born in Sicily and brought to America as a teenager, Masseria arrived in New York carrying a criminal reputation - and an ambition that would eventually transform him from a young burglar into one of the most powerful organized crime bosses in the city. From the Lower East Side and Harlem to the expanding criminal economy created by Prohibition, he built an organization whose reach extended across bootlegging, gambling, loansharking, extortion, and protection. He survived imprisonment at Sing Sing. He survived assassination attempts that should have killed him. He defeated rivals and accumulated wealth, territory, and fear until he could claim the title of "boss of bosses."But the same leadership model that built Masseria's empire would ultimately destroy it.As the Castellammarese War engulfed New York, Masseria found himself surrounded by younger men whose ambitions no longer fit beneath his old-world system of personal tribute and unquestioned authority. Among them was Charles "Lucky" Luciano-the ambitious lieutenant Masseria himself had helped advance. On April 15, 1931, Masseria sat down for lunch at a Coney Island restaurant. Hours later, he was dead. The Brooklyn Underworld Prince reconstructs the violent rise and dramatic fall of Joe Masseria, separating documented history from later Mafia mythology. Drawing on contemporary reporting, memoirs, testimony, and historical scholarship, it reveals the man behind the legend - and the transformation of American organized crime that followed his death.Joe Masseria did not simply lose a war.He represented an old order that history had already decided to replace.
