the Cadaver Synod: Pope Formosus, Stephen VI, and Strange True Story of a Corpse Judged Guilty in Ninth-Century Rome

In the winter of 897, a pope was put on trial. He had been dead for nine months. Dug up from his grave, dressed once more in his papal robes, and propped upright on a throne inside a Roman basilica, Pope Formosus was formally charged, judged, and convicted, by the very institution he had once led. Few people know that this moment actually happened, or how close it came to unraveling the papacy itself. The Cadaver Synod tells the true story of two popes, a furious noble family, and a corpse that refused to stay silent. It follows Formosus from his rise as a gifted diplomat through excommunication, exile, and an improbable path to the papal throne, all the way to the single decision that would cost him everything, even in death. And it follows Stephen VI, the man who exhumed him, whose thirst for vengeance would destroy his own life almost as violently as it destroyed his predecessor's corpse. What you're about to discover will change how you see the medieval church entirely. This is not simply a strange footnote in religious history. It is a case study in how sacred power, left unchecked, curdles into raw political obsession, and how ordinary people, even in the ninth century, still had the power to say enough. Why this story matters: it reveals how easily institutions built on faith can be hijacked by ambition. What you'll gain: a gripping, meticulously researched narrative that reads like a thriller but never strays from the historical record. When this story resonates: now more than ever, as questions of institutional power and accountability remain as urgent as they were over a thousand years ago. Who this book is for: readers of narrative history, church history, and true stories stranger than fiction. The hidden truth behind one of the papacy's darkest chapters is waiting.
