We are living in the midst of a distortion of history. A very clever distortion: first, it captures the popular imagination; then, it relies on the complicity of that very imagination. It began by saying: look how barbaric the defeated were in the last world war-a war that, moreover, broke out entirely through their own fault. Then they added: remember all that you suffered, you who endured their occupation, and all that you might have suffered, you who were not invaded because you preserved your neutrality thanks to the noble Allies. A whole philosophy was even invented out of this falsification. It consists of explaining to us that what either side was really like is of no importance; that only the image that had been created matters, and that this transposition is the only reality. Some twenty profiteers from the press, radio, and television-the paid creators of what is called "world public opinion"-thus saw themselves elevated to a metaphysical existence. But I believe, stubbornly, foolishly, in the Truth. I want to believe in the Truth. I strive to believe that it will ultimately triumph over everything, including the image that has been industrially manufactured. And that it will triumph when the New Dawn arrives-a dawn that neither this generation nor the next will likely see, given the Manichaeism that reigns in our time, with angels of Virtue and the damned vanquished by them.
