Bol THE DEATH OF AMERICA argues that the same mechanism - a small number of people gaining control over what a much larger number of people can eat, own, say, and do - shows up again and again across history, however different the label on the government doing it. The book traces that mechanism from Rome's collapse and Caesar's takeover of the Republic, through Lenin's Russia and its spread to a third of the world by the 1970s, through eleven twentieth- and twenty-first-century case studies (the USSR, East Germany, Poland, Romania, North Korea, Cuba, Vietnam, Cambodia, China, and Venezuela - the last a democracy that voted its own checks away), and then turns the same lens on more than twenty American institutions: the courts, the Fed, redistricting, the Pentagon, universities, unions, media, tech platforms, and corporate money. It closes with the author's own first-person case for why the pattern matters now - not that America is any of these countries, but that the generation inheriting it may no longer remember why the difference matters.
