the Devil-Worshipers of Stedingen: Count Henry Oldenburg, Dietrich Cleves, and Crusader Slaughter Stedinger Heretics

What happens when a pious community of medieval farmers refuses to surrender the fruits of their labor to a greedy archbishop? They are re-branded as demonolaters, sentenced to death by papal decree, and hunted down by armies of armored knights. In The Devil-Worshipers of Stedingen, historian Winston Maddox uncovers the harrowing true story of the 1234 Stedinger Crusade-a campaign where holy war was brought home to Western Europe to crush a tax revolt. Archbishop Gerhard II of Bremen needed a weapon to subdue the independent freeholders of the Weser Delta. He found that weapon in Rome's inquisitorial apparatus, fabricating absurd tales of secret midnight rituals, cat-kissing, and blood covenants to secure papal permission for a total war of extermination.Follow the tactical movements of Count Henry of Oldenburg and Count Dietrich of Cleves as they assembled thousands of crusaders under the promise of full absolution for their sins. Step onto the waterlogged battlefields of Lower Saxony, where peasant pike formations initially shattered noble cavalry charges, forcing the aristocracy to realize they were fighting an organized, desperate defense force that would rather die than wear the yoke of serfdom.Experience the tragic climax on May 27, 1234, at the Battle of Altenesch. Read the meticulous reconstruction of the final stand where over four thousand men, women, and children were systematically slaughtered in the mud, their lands confiscated and divided among the very lords who orchestrated their doom. This isn't just a history book; it's a visceral, tactical ride into medieval statecraft, propaganda, and human resilience. Can you truly understand the power of the medieval Church without witnessing the lengths it went to crush those who dared to stand against it?
