The Door Marked 214

Everyone believed Lila Benton stole the money and disappeared. The evidence tells a different story. When former FBI investigator Evan Rellan opens Northmark Investigative Services, his first client brings him a seven-year-old mystery: her sister Lila vanished after being accused of stealing more than fifty thousand dollars from a nonprofit housing organization. The official explanation seems simple. Lila took the money, packed a suitcase, left her car near a bus terminal, and ran.But Evan has spent his life learning that simple explanations can become dangerous when people stop checking the evidence.Working with former deputy Mara Delling, one of the few investigators who questioned the original conclusion, Evan begins rebuilding the case from the surviving records. Missing account logs. Payments authorized after Lila disappeared. A witness who changed his story. A forgotten work site. A car that arrived at the terminal later than everyone assumed. And beneath it all is another mystery Evan has never been able to leave behind-the unsolved murder of his uncle Nathan and the secret archive behind a door marked 214.As one accepted fact after another begins to unravel, Evan and Mara must determine not only what happened to Lila Benton, but how an entire investigation became certain of an answer the evidence never proved. The Door Marked 214 is Book One of The Unit 214 Files, an investigative mystery series about cold cases, buried records, forensic clues, and the dangerous distance between what people believe and what they can prove.
