The Drowned Acre

Northwest Ohio was built by draining what refused to stay dry. When agronomist Nell Ostrander returns to Kettle County after her brother Wyatt dies in a grain-bin accident, she expects grief, paperwork, and a farm full of unfinished work. Instead, she finds water where no water should be, voices traveling through buried tile, and dead people standing in ditches.Wyatt left behind one warning: do not reconnect what was deliberately broken.A century of competent drainage work has tied together farm systems older generations kept apart. Now something beneath the old wet country can move through every line, sump, culvert, and well the county has made efficient. With a storm coming and her fourteen-year-old niece in its path, Nell joins county engineers, farmers, contractors, and a sheriff who has learned not to dismiss old warnings. They have one chance to restore the forgotten separations before the whole landscape becomes one connected route. The land was never empty. It was contained.
