"I came to the U.S. in 1964 to study for an MA at Columbia University, and then earned a Ph.D. at New York University in 1968. I got married in 1965 to Katherine Griggs, and we had three daughters. I taught for thirty-five years at Hofstra University, and retired in 2001. Since then, I have resided in Point Harbor, a small town near the Outer Banks of North Carolina. I live on land that belonged to my wife's father's family since 1788. This is my twenty-sixth book."
