the Emergence of Corporate Social Responsibility in Democratic Republic Congo

The mining sector in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is experiencing the emergence of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and, through cooperation between the national government and German development partners, has succeeded in bringing together sector stakeholders in a tripartite dialogue to promote best practices that can contribute to the country's sustainable development. The tentative first steps taken by actors in the field of CSR have excited policymakers, who believed they were seeing the issue of poverty addressed and the living conditions of local populations improved. What is the current state of knowledge and implementation of CSR in the DRC? To what extent has it been adopted by mining stakeholders, the government, civil society, and mining operators? This study traces the evolution of CSR in the DRC and presents the approaches used to build consensus on stakeholders' understanding of the concepts related to the seven core issues of CSR, based on the ISO 26000 standard.
