This paper presents the findings of a qualitative study which examines the emotional turmoil experienced by children and young people who have been sexually abused within their own families. As this study shows, guilt and shame are the most frequently mentioned emotions. It also highlights the power of the family system and how a family secret can endure across many generations. A great deal of uncertainty also arises from the ambivalence of feelings of love and hate. Faith and trust are very difficult to maintain in families where sexual abuse occurs within the family. Furthermore, the study addresses issues of boundaries and loyalty.
