The war is going poorly for King Brodrik's army, and wizards are being killed faster than they an be replaced. Enter Bashariel: a fifty-year-old, grizzled, hard-drinking veteran army wizard who has seen it all and has zero patience for nonsense. When he's assigned a new partner to help turn the tide, he expects a hardened battlemage. Instead, he gets Valerius. Valerius is also fifty, but his primary magical expertise involved running a high-society floral shop. He is obsessed with fashionable clothing and cleanliness, completely out of his depth, and entirely misaligned with Bashariel's martial attitude. The mismatch doesn't stop there. Bashariel goes into battle alongside his fiercely loyal, mind-linked war-mastiff. Valerius arrives with his own telepathic companion: a pampered, highly opinionated cat. With the kingdom crumbling around them, these two mages, and their aggressively feuding pets, must somehow learn to work together. Can a hardened soldier and a florist survive the front lines (and each other) long enough to save the realm? High adventure and high comedy collide in this thrilling fantasy epic.
