Prayer does not begin with persuading God to act. It begins with discovering what He intends. Against the mist-wrapped slopes and conference rooms of postwar Mount Kuling, twelve historical parables follow believers learning that anxiety, intensity, and human tactics cannot manufacture spiritual authority. These stories enter the hidden labor of prayer: intercession that must first discern, spiritual conflict that must be met from the right ground, watchfulness that refuses panic, and faith that stands because Christ's victory is already complete. The characters repeatedly discover that earnestness alone is not enough. Even sincere prayer can become another form of self-effort when it tries to originate what belongs to God. Through the subjective work of the cross, natural urgency is brought into judgment. The believer must learn to see before asking, to ask according to God's purpose, to stand where Christ has already triumphed, and to cooperate without attempting to force heaven's hand. Prayer, then, is neither passivity nor religious striving. It is active fellowship with God's intention: listening, discerning, asking, resisting, waiting, and standing until what has been settled in Christ is given room to appear in experience. Are we praying from our need alone, or from the ground of God's purpose and Christ's finished victory? The Four-Step Stream is Volume Ten of The House-to-House Chronicles: Parables of the Little Flock.
