In 1888, the Gentlemen of Ireland undertook the second of the four tours of North America they would make in their history. It was an intensive schedule; they committed to playing 13 matches over five-week weeks, starting with five games in Canada before crossing into America for the tour's conclusion. The Irish had, according to their captain: "gotten together a set of players that had no superior in Ireland." As was always the case with the four tours the Irish undertook in America, the only real test they would face would be when they took to the field against the Gentlemen of Philadelphia.
