The Global Human Rights Landscape. A short guide to understanding the international organizations and the opportunities for engagement. Paul Coleman. Meghan Fischer. Elyssa Koren. Foreword by Mary Ann Glendon. In the 70 years since the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, its vision of human rights has morphed drastically at the hands of international organization founded in the 20th century to promote and protect human rights. These organizations exhort countries to legalize abortion, often under the guide of maternal health, and the new frontier of the right to life has become a so-called ‘right to die’. In the name of combating ‘discrimination’, they march toward the global legalization of same-sex marriage. And while some attempt to fight religious persecution, most devote considerably more resources to these other causes while minorities experience atrocities and even genocide. This guide provides an overview of the international organizations that have undermined the human rights project. It scrutinizes the missions and activities of the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the European Union, the Council of Europe, the Organization of American States, and the African Union. As an update to the 2014 edition, this guide highlights examples form the past five years to show how international organizations have continued to expand their activities in violation of authentic human rights. It identifies ways for individuals and organizations to engage with these entities in order to defend religious freedom, the sanctity of life, and marriage and the family.
