We describe the dangers that lie ahead as though they remain conveniently hypothetical, as though the reader still has time to prepare, to deliberate, to choose. That temptation must be resisted here, because the story told in the preceding chapters is not a warning about what may come. It is an accounting of what already exists. The drone age is not approaching. It arrived somewhere over the deserts of Afghanistan in the early 2000s, gathered speed in the killing fields of eastern Ukraine, matured in the drone-saturated skies of the Middle East, and crystallized in the spring of 2026 in a Pentagon budget request so enormous - $54.6 billion for a single autonomous warfare organization in a single fiscal year - that it constitutes less a policy choice than a declaration of civilizational direction. The United States, China, and Russia have each, in their own way, placed an irreversible bet on autonomous lethal systems as the defining weapons of the century. The bets have been placed. The chips are on the table. The world we now inhabit is the world those bets are building.
