Pan-Sophia Enchiretica, published in 1682 by Arnold Bachimius Denstonius, presents an "experimental universal philosophy" grounded in Genesis, alchemy, fire-based experiment, and a rejection of Aristotelian matter and form. Its central claim is that the world is alive through a created Light, also called the Spirit or Soul of the World. This Light is a real, divisible, corporeal substance that penetrates all things, moves the heavens, animates minerals, plants, animals, and humans, and unfolds Ideas according to the proportions of particles. The work argues that the true principles of bodies are Earth, Water, Salt, and Light, with Sulphur as a secondary composite principle. Air and fire are denied the status of elements: air is a mixture of subtle particles and vapours in ether, while fire is Light entangled with sulphurous matter. All bodies are made from indivisible particles arranged geometrically, so generation and corruption are not substantial changes but rearrangements of already existing particles under the guidance of Light.Denstonius applies this system to cosmology, meteorology, minerals, plants, animals, and theology. The heavens are fluid ether rather than solid spheres; stars and planets contain Light and exert effects through effluvia. Rain, snow, hail, lightning, comets, sound, magnetism, sympathies, antipathies, birthmarks, and weapon-salve are all explained through particles, Light, effluvia, pores, ferments, and Archei.Minerals and metals are living in lower degrees. Metals are forms of one metallic Mercury, differing by purity and maturity, with gold especially rich in Light and medicinal power. Plants grow by attracting nutritive particles through roots and air; their ashes retain life, symbolising resurrection. Animals and humans develop from eggs or seed through the action of the sensitive soul, but humans also receive an intellective soul from God.The final sections integrate this natural philosophy with Catholic theology, discussing original sin, Christ, Mary, resurrection, Eucharistic consecration, and transubstantiation. Overall, the text portrays nature as a divinely ordered, living laboratory where experiment, Scripture, and alchemy converge into cosmology.
