Single parenthood is often associated with financial hardship, poverty and poor health. As it is predominantly women who are single parents, this is referred to as the 'feminisation of poverty'. Single fathers tend to represent a marginalised group, as there is hardly any data available on them. Whilst researching this topic, I realised just how negatively the socio-economic status and health of parents in this situation can be affected. I myself was brought up by my mother alone, along with my three siblings. We never received any financial support from my father. It was only when I was at university that I realised I had actually grown up in poverty, as my mother had to make every mark count.
