From the castles of Scotland to the Atlantic islands of Madeira and the Azores; from the European courts to the sierras of Minas Gerais, the history of the Drummonds traverses almost a thousand years of loyalty, exile, nobility, faith and endurance. An ancient lineage of medieval Scotland, the Drummonds gave queens to the Scottish monarchy, earls and dukes to the European aristocracy, officers and generals to the Stuart cause, governors and matriarchs to the Portuguese Atlantic world, and barons, guardas-mores and figures of distinction to the history of Brazil. Faithful to the House of Stuart and, in many of their branches, to the Roman Catholic faith, they suffered confiscations, attainders and exiles during the dynastic conflicts that shook Scotland and Great Britain. Even so, they preserved the name, the memory and the consciousness of their origin. This work follows the trajectory of the family from its roots in Scotland, by way of the ancestral castles of Stobhall and of Drummond, the long years of Jacobite exile at Saint-Germain-en-Laye and at Lussan, in the French Languedoc, the settlement on the Island of Madeira and the expansion of its descendants in Brazil. More than a mere genealogy, the book reconstructs the historical world in which the Drummonds lived: the clans of the Highlands, the Scottish monarchy, the wars of independence, the Stuart cause, the continental exiles, the Madeiran morgadios and the formation of family branches in the Luso-Brazilian sphere.
