In a world where young Immortals roam the earth, earning the name of Spirits as they grow into protectors for the people, the young Spirit of Táysha is awakened from his carefree, open life with the tribe of the square, and is brought by conquistadors to the house upon the hill . . . a house where collected Spirits all dwell, watched closely and directed into 'civilization', so says the Watcher men and Father Alonso, as a Spirit of New Spain. Blind Obedience to Master Spain, a Spirit of One, and most notably an Empire himself, is the goal for the Spirits, but some of whom are too rebellious to tame. The Spirit of Táysha, rechristened as Tejas and named Alejandro, is one of them. Yaotyl of Mexico City, a fallen Empire, is another. What is Alejandro's fate here, to be pushed around or the one pushing? To love or to bite? And how will this plucky, small protagonist eventually become the Spirit of Texas . . . ?
