Thomas Mayne Reid (1818–1883) was a Scottish-American novelist best known for his adventure novels. "The Headless Horseman" (1865): A historical novel set during the American Revolutionary War, featuring the Hessian mercenaries and the legend of the headless horseman. Mayne Reid's works often incorporated his experiences as a traveler and an adventurer.
