The Illusory City Collection

The Academic Library of the Chinese National Academy of Arts: The Illusory City Collection (Studies on Buddhist Doctrines and Figures) is divided into two main sections: "Doctrines" and "Figures."The Doctrines section contains six essays, all of which elaborate on compassion (karü¿)-the core of Buddhist teachings.The Figures section includes nine essays, beginning with the great Later Qin dynasty translator and eminent monk Kum¿raj¿va and concluding with the modern monk Taixu, who dedicated himself to the modernization of Buddhism. In between, the section covers the Sixth Patriarch of Chan Buddhism, Huineng, of the Tang dynasty; the Song dynasty monks Qisong and Mian Xianjie; and the Yuan dynasty statesman Liu Bingzhong. The section also extends beyond the Buddhist monastic community to include the interactions between Buddhism and scholar-officials and intellectuals outside the tradition.
